The National Museum of Contemporary Art hosts the 30th Anniversary of the Young Korean Artists exhibition from April 17 (Sat) to June 6 (Sun) 2010. Ever since the Young Artist Exhibition in 1981 (renamed New Talent Exhibition in 1990) the event has greeted its fifteenth exhibit and 30th anniversary.

Young Korean Artist shocked the world by exploring the experimental world of new and ambitious young artists. It has been the frontier for the new generation in the 1990’s and grounds for expressing the diversified environment of the new millennia, remaining in the front line for edgy and unique young artists to illuminate Korean contemporary art through their eyes.

Young Korean Artist has introduced 327 artists into the world reflecting the past, present and future of Korean contemporary art. Five of these artists Hoseok Kim, Sangkyoon Noh, Yeongbae Lee, Hyun Chung, Yongsun Suh have been awarded “Artist of the Year” by the National Museum of Contemporary Arts, while Bohnchang Koo, Doho Suh, Bul Lee, Jeong?hwa Choi became internationally celebrated artists. This exhibition is a recapitulation of the footsteps and achievements as it prepares for its rebirth as New Tide in step with the new era with new content. It is a historic event that overlooks thirty years Korean contemporary art, an incredible display of dynamic movements and fierce individuality, through the works of previous participants.

Among the 327 artists that took part in the exhibition, 43 were carefully selected considering artistic critique and capacity along with the display space based on the historic influence and notable events in Korean contemporary art. The ages range from Yongik Kim (from the 1st exhibition), born in 1947, to Kijong Zin (from the 14th exhibition), born in 1981, showing a thirty?year gap. Predecessors and new blood present 150 of their most important works of various trends such as western painting, Korean painting, sculpture, photography, video display, and many other forms of art. By publishing a portfolio with the commentaries of art critics Kwangsoo Oh, Seongrok Seo, Mikyung Kim, Youngtaek Park, Chung?hwan Kho and an introduction from an art historian the activities and accomplishments of these artists are illuminated in various angles, along with an objective and precise historic assessment. It records interviews of past commissioners, curators and over twenty artists who participated in the exhibitions who testify to historic events and unknown behind the scene stories so as to draw a dimensional and comprehensive picture of what went on in the days.

During the display period there will be seminars, visit the artist studio, and curator talks among other cultural and educational programs open for the public to attend. And also, gallery talks will be held on weekdays at 2 pm and 4 pm (2 pm, 4pm and 6pm on weekends).
