60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Korea and Spain The Shadow of Speech
The Shadow of Speech, MACBA Collection
Seoul, South Korea July 12th, 2010 - The National Museum of Contemporary Art (director Soonhoon Bae) will introduce The Shadow of Speech, MACBA Collection through July 13 to October 3, 2010 at Gallery 1 and the Central Hall to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the opening of diplomatic ties between Korea and Spain.
The exhibition is a selection of work owned by MACBA, an institute dedicated to collecting artwork that reflects Spanish culture and history. Ever since its foundation in Barcelona, Spain, MACBA had become one of the largest art museums alongside the Museo Reina Sofia and the Museo del Prado.
The Shadow of Speech MACBA Collection features the works of 63 contemporary artists - such as Broodthaers and Tapies - that are united by the theme of language and present an alternative means of communication to the art world. The collection also includes work by artists from outside Spain, offering the audience a wider perspective and an opportunity to compare international trends with movements within Spanish art circles. The exhibition consists of 138 works of art, ranging from more traditional genres such as paintings and sculptures to experimental forms that incorporate installation and visual media. The exhibition will expose the audience to cutting-edge contemporary artwork from artists in and out of Spain.
MACBA, which opened its doors in 1995 as one of the leading contemporary art museums in Spain, concentrates on contemporary artists and their artworks. Its collections have focused on particular themes rather than on a chronological approach. Now, its results can be observed at this exhibition presented by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Spain- Korea diplomatic relations.
About the theme
As an independent entity, language is of semantic being in itself and at the same time can give rise to a wide range of different meanings in works of art. In artworks, the existence of those meanings is manifested like shadows and shade. In this exhibition, MACBA examines the diverse relationships between language and artworks and literature, politics and the mass media, and presents them through eight different sub-topics including poetry, writing, actionism, political expression, the media, theatre and cinema.
